और बस चलते रहना है (From a movie "Page 3")

Installing windows after Linux

It turned out to be a big problem for me when I wanted to install windows in my system recently. I had fedora 9i installed on my system. I wanted to install windows vista on it.

As windows does not recognise ext3 and other filesystems it is necessary to remove those partitions using linux live cd/dvd.

Here are the steps to install windows when linux is already installed on it.

Prerequisites: Windows DVD, Linux live cd/dvd

  1. Insert the live boot cd/dvd of Linux and boot the system from the cd/dvd.

  2. Use gparted (generally it comes with all the distros now) to see how the hard disk is being used.

Now you get two choice if you want to install windows and linux both or only windows.

When you want to install just windows:

  • Use linux live boot cd/dvd to start installing linux.

  • Use its partition manager to delete all the partitions and stop the installation in between.

  • After you are quit the installation remove the live cd/dvd and insert the windows dvd.

  • Now you can continue with the usual installation of windows.

If you want to keep linux and install windows also:

  • Plan out how much space you wish to devote for each operating system.

  • I would suggest give more space for windows and less for linux as you can access all windows drives using linux but not vice versa simply.

  • For normal user a disk space of 25-30GB is more than sufficient for linux.

  • Now using gparted shrink the disk space of linux drives. Dont shrink anything other than /home or / directory. Dont disturb other like swap area, /usr, /boot or any other as it might lead to an inconsistent state of linux distro.

  • Format the available disk space and make it ntfs compatible.

  • Now using windows dvd you can install windows on available free space.

Whenever you install window after installing linux, windows bootloader takes over linux bootloader grub and it does not recognize linux partitions. You will need to put grub to Main boot record of your system to be able to use both operating systems.

Education need to be redefined

One more terrorist attack in India. This time it goes in its financial capital of India. With more than 150 people dead and many more injured. With more than 12% of our budget of our country going in national security, where do we lack?

Is it the security measures, intelligence or something else which is a failure. If we begin to analyze it we find it is not that just one agency or one particular government is flawed, whole system that is working is buggy or flawed at not just a single point but at many. With intelligence being the biggest appearing failure, no one is more better. People who are recruited in police, army or intelligence services have ceased to be on the basis of merit, but by the will of politicians. After recruitment, transfer, then promotion all is dependent of the will of higher authorities.

So is there any solution to it. Can we fight against the corruption where everything is corrupt or should we give up? Surely giving up is no solution to any problem. But then to change things where and how to do it. We cannot start fighting against it from anywhere, even if we do that, there are new breed of such officials who comes and the system is back to its original state. If we start going to roots, we find the problem starts with laziness and greediness. People become corrupt because either they are greedy or either they are lazy. Bribe is another synonym we have given to corruption. Greediness is what makes people fall from their character. Next some people who are luckily not greedy are lazy. People not willing to work tries to take shortcut. They fall in the pit of corruption because of their laziness.

Even if we observe these problems, what could be the possible solution to these problems. Surely we cannot go and teach these people ethical values now. Most of them wont even listen whatever we try to say. Most of them wont listen to any ethics or any other thing which we could tell them. If it is very difficult to pursuade a teenager for something better leave the point of teaching any such corrupt official.

Solution to such a problem lies very much in the roots. As some of the largest building are built on very strong bases same is the case of people. The change has to be done in our primary education system.

With the current way how are education goes is , we study for exams, score marks and get to next class or next standard. Same process goes on in next class also and the same way we never come to know when we finished our schools and colleges. And about exams and marks, it is absolutely no problem. No need even to study from a long time just on the last night( or one more day) open the last 5-10 years paper and no one can stop you from scoring A grade (This was how I passed my 12th board exams). And you get the reason to believe you are smarter than many other who studied a long time read many book but scored lower than you. Because they read different kind of books or any book, they had to make their brains work to assimilate all the knowledge and then to understand it ( if it is from a good book or either a very bad book, average books are make with the exams in focus), but not exactly preparing for what is asked in exam.

We start this with one time affair and than make a habit of it. We stop studying as we know the trick how to score in the exams. This becomes our attitude but we say I will work when time will come. And when time comes we see the things are so difficult so tough that we try to find a shortcut for it. This becomes a habit of ours. Most of the corrupt official would intentionaly want to do harm of others but the situation ( arised by their laziness) makes them do it. If this is the case one of the possible solution to this problem can a good evaluation pattern which is not just based on last ten year question papers but on understanding as well as aptitude. Subjects like history (if are taught) could be tested by asking question in which they might face dilemma, their justification will test their understanding, english with written and oral examinations both. This will develop the habit of people to work hard which could avoid a lot of problems.

Team sports which develop the spirit of teamwork can help in sacrificing greediness. When you are playing a team game sometimes you have to sacrifice your own score to win the game. You cant be greedy on your part as well as win the game.
Although with a reasonably good syllabus the education system will not give good yields until we remove the biggest loopholes in it. With making aptitude and understanding as the center of focus BY THE EXAMINATIONS it will surely develop the capacity of people to work hard.

Enforcing draconian laws may stop some people from indulging in anti-human activities but not all. Also we ourselves are breaking the fundamental laws of peace and love. The ultimate long lasting results can only be attained by not forcing things on people but making them do themselves willing which can be attained by education.
